THE SOCIAL MEDIA USE AND ITS IMPACT ON VARSITY STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Abstract


ABSTRACT

 

It is undeniable that social media has gained wider acceptability and usability and is also becoming probably the most important tools among varsity students. The research aims to investigate the use of social media and its impact on students’ academic performance. More specifically, it attempt to find kinds of social media commonly used by them, the time allotment of access, and its impact on students’ academic performance.  A case study to 38 students of English education program of STKIP MuhammadiyahPringsewu was conducted. The findings show that:First, mostly of students prefer usingfacebook and instagramamong others social media; second, its time used in accessing the social media between thirty minutes to two hours a day; and third there was no impact of using social media on students’ academic performance.
